KVNC – Venice: The Suncoast Cafe

The Suncoast Cafe in the FBO in Venice

When most people talk about going to Venice for a meal, they are usually referring to the two seafood places that were formerly within walking distance of the approach end of Runway 5. Sharkey’s is still there. However, since 9-11, the area is fenced off and now you have to get a ride from the FBO to get over there.

Nobody told me about the Suncoast Cafe until last week. At first I didn’t understand. “You mean Sharkey’s?” “No” said Zak, “This is a diner right inside the FBO.” I had no idea.

So Zak and I flew the trusty 210 down to VNC to try the Cafe. What a pleasant surprise!

Humble Surroundings, but Great Food

The place is not much more than a one room diner, but the food is excellent.

It’s very small, with only about 6 tables. But the food is excellent.
It is located within the FBO, which is very convenient

The Flight

It’s a pretty easy flight to VNC from ORL, but you do have to consider two Class B airspaces (MCO and TPA). We decided to use flight following and got good service from both.

Since VNC is non-towered, the traffic can get pretty hairy. There are a few flight schools there that are very active, plus it’s a popular touch and go practice destination for schools from nearby airports. Use caution in the pattern!

Be careful in the traffic area! Lot’s of pattern work going on there

The Meal

We had a very good, friendly waitress who took great care of us. I wish I had gotten her name.

She was super nice and brought us everything we needed. We tipped her very well!

I ordered the Runway Reuben. Zak got the Suncoast Curry.

Zak’s Curry was “spicy but very good.” My reuben was excellent, and so was the macaroni salad.

Service was quick and with a smile. Free refills on drinks and Mango Iced Tea.

PIREP

I usually do a PIREP here on the price of the trip, but today it was (for me anyway) FREE. Zak needed ten hours with a qualified instructor and he paid for everything. I can say that even with tip, both of our meals were under $40.

We parked down the ramp, with the idea of using the self serve, but Zak changed his mind and decided to have the linemen top us off. The FBO was very happy.

We originally planned to do the self serve fuel but decided to give the FBO some business.

Summary

If you are in the mood for some excellent food from a “mom and pop” diner, and you don’t mind reggae music, stop by the Suncoast. It’s much easier than getting a lift over to Sharkey’s etc.
